Tricky Words

Tricky words are common words which are not able to be segmented, these are sometimes tricky for the children to read and write.  In our Supersonic Phonics Friends scheme the children will learn new tricky words with Tess each week.  

 

Within all areas of our classroom and during writing sessions the children have access to Tricky Word mats, seen below, which they can use to support their writing.

Basic 2 Tricky Words:

Group 1: N/A.  Group 2: I.  Group 3: I, to.  Group 4: I, to, no, go.  Group 5: I, to, no, go, the.  Group 6: I, to, no, go, the, into.

Basic 3 Tricky Words:

Group 1: I, to, no, go, the, into.  Group 2: he, she.  Group 3: he, she, we, me, be.  Group 4: he, she, we, me, be, has, his, off, as, is, us. 

Group 5: he, she, we, me, be, has, his, off, as, is, us, was, my, you.  Group 6: he, she, we, me, be, has, his, off, as, is, us, was, my, you, they, her.

Group 7: he, she, we, me, be, has, his, off, as, is, us, was, my, you, they, her, are, all.

Basic 4 Tricky Words:

Group 1: said, have, like.  Group 2: said, have, like, do, some, come.  Group 3: said, have, like, do, some, come, little, so, one.  

Group 4: said, have, like, do, some, come, little, so, one, what, when, were.

Group 5: said, have, like, do, some, come, little, so, one, what, when, were, there, then, them, that, this.

The Higher Levels of Phonics Tricky Words:

 

5C Choose to Use:

 Group 1: oh, their, people, looked, Mr, Mrs, son.   Group 2: oh, their, people, looked, Mr, Mrs, son, asked, called, could, should, would.  

Group 3: oh, their, people, looked, Mr, Mrs, son, asked, called, could, should, would, of, love, here, says, today, friend, want.  

Group 4-7: oh, their, people, looked, Mr, Mrs, son, asked, called, could, should, would, of, love, here, says, today, friend, want, our, house, once, where, why, with, over, above, live, does, goes, tall, call, small, your, after, half, only.

5B Switch It:

 Week 1: work, thought, though, laughed, please, different.   Week 2: work, thought, though, laughed, please, different, anybody, anyone, anything. 

Week 3: work, thought, though, laughed, please, different, anybody, anyone, anything, somebody, someone, something.

Week 4: work, thought, though, laughed, please, different, anybody, anyone, anything, somebody, someone, something, everybody, everyone, everything.
