The Curriculum at Irk Valley Community School

Our Irk Valley Vision and Values drive all aspects of school life, including our approach to the design and delivery of our school’s curriculum. We have designed a unique curriculum, underpinned by our school’s vision and values, and the National Curriculum to meet the needs of the children at Irk Valley.

We aim to deliver a world-class, broad and balanced curriculum that gives children the knowledge and personal skills they need to succeed in the next stage of their lives.

The curriculum comprises:

  • The statutory curriculum – these are the subjects set out in The Primary National Curriculum and the EYFS statutory framework
  • The non-statutory curriculum – this is all other learning which we believe will enable children to thrive and reach their full potential, such as special learning days, educational visits and extra-curricular learning.

We strive to ensure that the content of the curriculum, and the way it is delivered, help to meet the needs of our vibrant, Mancunian, urban and multi-cultural community, enabling children “to succeed anywhere they go, because they were grown in our valley, Irk Valley.”

We aim to deliver a world-class, broad and balanced curriculum.  The curriculum comprises:

  • The statutory curriculum – these are the subjects set out in The Primary National Curriculum and the EYFS statutory framework.
  • The non-statutory curriculum – this is all other learning which we believe will enable children to thrive and reach their full potential.

There is a range of subjects and activities in place that help pupils acquire knowledge, understanding and skills. Mathematical, linguistic, scientific, technical, social, physical and artistic learning is evident throughout the curriculum. The curriculum is further enriched by a broad range of activities, such as special learning days, educational visits and extra-curricular learning.

Along with the school vision and values, our curriculum “drivers” (GROW) help us to make decisions about the content and organisation of our curriculum so that it builds upon the experiences and backgrounds of our pupils. This enables us to provide a curriculum that helps to overcome potential barriers to learning that we have identified.
