Reading Books:

We would be extremely grateful if you could encourage your child to read for 5 minutes each day, this helps to improve their reading fluency.

Alongside reading with ourselves in school, it would be amazing if possible that they are listened to by an adult at home too.  Don't forget to share different types of books too - fairytales, comics, books in your home language or fact books too. It all counts!

We ask that you sign their red Reading Record each week to show that your child has read their book and can talk about it.  However, there maybe occasions when your child will be asked to keep their book to read again and understand it better.

What do parents need to know about home reading?

• Reading books and records need to be brought into school every day. 
• Children are listened to read by their teacher or teaching assistant throughout the week.
• Comments in the reading diary will focus on phonics and fluency.
• Bookmarks give ideas for comprehension questions related to books to share at home.
• To promote reading and positive attitudes school will consistently praise children verbally, stamp reading record and give stickers.

Homework:

Homework is given out every Friday and should be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday.

We encourage the children to complete their homework as independently as possible as work set consolidates their learning activities during the week however, discussions with an adult may be necessary.

Any written tasks or handwriting can be completed inside their homework book, where required please take photographs and attach them to the children's individual Dojo portfolios.

Supersonic Phonic Friends Parent Newsletter:

Once the children have completed a 'group' of sounds within their daily Phonics lessons they will be sent home with a SSPF Parent Newsletter to share with their families and to consolidate learning at home.

Each newsletter contains all the sounds recently taught and a selection of words which contain the focus sounds.  Please encourage the children to segment and blend these words, then 'read with speed' which will help improve their reading fluency over time.
