Chronology and Key Concepts
History Curriculum: Chronology and Key Concepts
At Irk Valley Primary School, we aim to inspire children to become curious, knowledgeable and reflective historians. Our History curriculum enables pupils to develop a secure understanding of the past, make meaningful connections across different time periods and understand how history continues to shape the world around them. History is taught through a carefully planned chronological journey, beginning with children's own personal and family history in the Early Years and progressing through key periods of British, local and world history by the end of Key Stage 2. Pupils study significant events, civilisations and individuals, developing an understanding of how societies have changed over time and how historical events are interconnected. Our curriculum is organised around four key concepts, which are revisited throughout each year group to help children build and deepen their historical understanding:
Activism and Power
Children learn about individuals and groups who have influenced change, exploring themes such as democracy, equality, governance, monarchy and civil rights. Examples include Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst and the development of democracy in Ancient Greece. [History themes | Word], [Whole Scho...iculum Map | Word]
Our History
Pupils develop an understanding of their own history, the history of their local area and Britain's wider historical story. Through studying local heritage, settlements and significant people, children develop a sense of identity, belonging and pride in their community. Innovation and Exploration
Children investigate the achievements of inventors, explorers and civilisations that have shaped the modern world. From the Wright Brothers and Amelia Earhart to Ancient Egypt and the Early Islamic Civilisation, pupils learn how innovation has transformed societies across time. Conflict and Resolution
Pupils explore how conflict has influenced historical change, studying invasions, wars, resistance and peace. Topics such as the Romans, Vikings and warfare through time help children understand the causes and consequences of conflict and the importance of resolution and cooperation. As pupils move through the school, they develop the skills of historians by asking questions, evaluating evidence, comparing different interpretations of the past and constructing informed conclusions. By the end of Year 6, children can place historical periods accurately on a timeline, explain causes and consequences, evaluate sources and make connections between different historical concepts and periods. Through our diverse and inclusive curriculum, we strive to ensure that all children leave Irk Valley with a strong understanding of chronology, an appreciation of their local and global heritage, and the knowledge and skills needed to think critically about the past and its impact on the present.
