Set 7

Pronouncing 'y' phoneme.

Pronouncing 'z' and 'zz' phoneme.

The 'z' sound is pronounced the same as 'zz.' However we differentiate the two by telling the children 'z' is pronounced quickly, short and snappy whereas 'zz' is stretched a little longer.
The word used in this audio clip (buzz) is only an example to hear the sound clearly. Words such as zap, Zak and zip contain the 'z' digraph.

Pronouncing 'qu' digraph.

Set 7 introduces 4 new graphemes, included one doubled letter  with that allows another bank of  suggested words to decode.

At Irk Valley we encourage the children to add soundbuttons to words to help them identify each grapheme.  We use a dot (button) underneath a phoneme and a straight line underneath a digraph.
