Our current learning focuses on the statements found below. As a class, we are all working towards the expected Year 1 standard within our lessons, 1-1 reading sessions and challenges provided in our provision areas.
Reading Towards the Expected Standard children should:
- Use phonics to decode words
- Begin to read some Year 1 Common Exception Words.
- Read 1 syllable words Eg. cat
- Re-read books to build up fluency
- Begin to answer literal questions with support
To help your children even more please refer to the information below and practice at home. We can not state how important it is for you to sign your child's red reading record each night once you have read/ questioned them to evidence that they are practicing these techniques.
Recommended Reads [Reading for Pleasure]
Reading for pleasure is an important factor throughout the children's learning journey. As well as reading the book themselves, listening to a parent/ sibling read a variety of stories to them allows the children to see, hear and read different vocabulary and stretches their imaginations. We encourage you to read in your spoken language at home as well.
With that in mind here are some recommended books appropriate for the children to enjoy. They will have access to some of these in the reading areas within their classrooms.
