Patterns (Fine Motor Skills)

Fine Motor Skills

It's encouraged to wake up and warm up our fingers before any of our handwriting lessons with some of our fun exercises shown below.  You can also find lots of ideas and fine motor activities on You Tube, there is a link below to begin the fun!

Below are some of the patterns used to practice and prepare children for letter formation.  Initially children are encouraged to follow and copy these patterns using big arm movements, ensuring they start and follow the correct directions shown.  Some children love to create these movements with ribbon sticks (instructions can be found below).

This is then developed into tracing and copying the patterns with pencil onto paper reinforcing the tripod grip.

Practice Worksheets

Letter-join have some fabulous work sheets to allow the children to practice these patterns, creating fun artwork along the way.

Once you've completed the patterns with a pencil why not grab some colours and repeat until there's no space on the paper left!
