Irk Valley Community School

The importance of valuing others, listening to different viewpoints, taking care of belongings, manners, appreciating the diversity which exists in our community and beyond

The determination to reach the highest standards, every day.

The desire to grow and develop, achieving the best for ourselves and each other.

The knowledge that working with others, asking for help when needed and supporting others to develop are the foundations of growth.

The importance of joy in what we do, discovering our strengths and using them.

In recent years we have introduced a new handwriting scheme called Letter-join.  To support handwriting at school, pupils can also log into Letter-join at home accessing lots of resources including touch-screen activities on iPads or tablets.

Letter-join animates every capital and lower case letter along with numbers and punctuation to model the correct formation enabling the children to 'try' it for themselves and produce neater handwriting with consistent spacing, letter sizes and introducing joins.

Below is an alphabet mat showing how capital letters and lower case letters should be formed.  The red dot shows where each letter should begin when writing.

Working at the Expected Standard:

  • form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters
  • use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters

Handwriting Lessons:

The children will also undertake weekly handwriting lessons to learn how to form letters correctly, throughout the year this will progress to joining letters.

Below you will find example lessons which we use in school, please feel free to use these at home for extra practice.
