Working at the Expected Standard the children should be able to:
Sit correctly at a table, hold a pencil comfortably and correctly
Form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place
Form capital letters and digits 0 - 9 the correct way around
Say out loud what they are about to write & compose a sentence orally before writing
Re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense
Read aloud their writing clearly enough to be heard by others
Leave spaces between words
Join words and clauses using and
Punctuate sentences using a capital letter and full stop

Working Above the Expected Standard/ Greater Depth the pupils should be confident in all the above ‘working at expected standard’ objectives, plus:
- Join words and clauses using and or because
- Use capital letters for names of people, places, days of the week, personal pronoun ‘I’
- Punctuate sentences using a capital letter, full stop, question or exclamation mark
- Begin to join handwriting using horizontal and diagonal joins
